How to Control Underwear Quality Before Shipment

Quality control before shipment is the buyer’s final opportunity to confirm that bulk underwear matches the approved product brief. The most useful inspection plan starts before production: both sides should agree on the approved sample, measurement tolerances, materials, colors, labels, packaging and the method for recording defects.

1. Confirm the Inspection Reference

Do not inspect against a reference photo alone. Use the approved pre-production sample, final tech pack, purchase order, size specification, color standard and packaging artwork as the reference set. If any document conflicts with another, resolve the difference in writing before the factory packs the order.

2. Check Fabric, Elastic and Trims

Verify fabric composition, weight or hand feel where specified, color consistency and visible surface defects. For bras and panties, also check elastic recovery, strap and underband tension, hooks, rings, sliders, wires, pads and other components. The test method should match the product and destination-market requirement instead of relying on a generic pass or fail statement.

3. Review Sewing and Construction

Inspect seam type, stitch security, thread trimming, skipped stitches, puckering, symmetry and attachment strength. High-stress points such as strap joins, hook-and-eye tape, crotch seams and elastic ends need extra attention. Compare workmanship across several cartons and sizes rather than checking only the best-looking pieces from the top of one carton.

4. Measure the Size Range

Choose samples from the agreed size breakdown and measure the points listed in the tech pack. Record the actual result beside the allowed tolerance. A garment can look acceptable on a table and still fail the agreed fit or measurement specification, so measurements and visual inspection should be treated as separate checks.

5. Verify Labels and Packaging

Confirm the brand label, care label, fiber information, size marking, country-of-origin wording, barcode, hangtag and polybag or box. Check that the carton quantity, size ratio, carton mark and shipping information match the purchase order. Buyers remain responsible for confirming the labeling and compliance rules of their destination market.

6. Agree How Defects Are Reported

Before inspection, define what counts as a critical, major or minor defect and agree on the sampling or inspection method. The report should show quantities checked, defects found, measurements, photos, packing results and the proposed corrective action. If an independent inspection company will be used, share its checklist with the factory before the visit.

• Approved sample and final tech pack are available to the inspector.
• Fabric, color, components and workmanship match the agreed specification.
• Measurements are recorded across the required sizes.
• Branding, care labels, barcodes and packaging are correct.
• Carton assortment, quantity and shipping marks are verified.
• Any failed item has a written rework and reinspection plan.
